Color Change PaintThe Most Dramatic Color Changing Paint Available!

While color change paint have been available for many years, SpectraFX takes “color shifting ” to a whole new level. Traditional color-changing paints create a swirl of different colors when you look at them from different angles. SpectraFX is different from these paints in that it creates a true “chameleon” color shift from 1 distinct color to another. This controlled color shift creates a much more dramatic effect, so that 2 people looking at the same object will see two completely different colors.

This dramatic color shift is the result of special, patented crystal flakes instead of color pigments used in traditional color-changing paints. And Alsa has put the creative control of these amazing crystal flakes in the consumers hands, by selling the flakes themselves instead of pre-mixed paints. So you are free to add them to any type of clear paint or coating you would like and you can also adjust the amount of flakes used to change effects.

And, by selling the flakes instead of pre-mixed paints Alsa is able to pass along significant savings to its customers. So your favorite clear paint or coating enhanced by SpectraFX flakes ends up costing a fraction of the price of other color changing paints, which can run thousands of dollars per gallon.

Please read more about the versatility of SpectraFX in the Application Guide and browse through our Product Showcase to see examples of the creative designs produced by this captivating paint.

Bullet Points

bottles Alsa’s SpectraFX is a powdered pigment that can be added to any clear carrier, and applied over any existing base coat color. These pigments all use a slightly larger particle size than normally found in chameleon-like paints, and this produces an eye popping, sparkly look to the colors as they shift. (Compare this to Alsa’s “Mystic” line of paints, which use a much smaller particle size, and give a more opaque look). These colors will change dramatically, when applied over different color base coats. We recommend Alsa base coats, but there are many fine base coats on the market that will work as well. Generally shot over a black base coat, (such as Alsa’s Jet Black base coat, part number “KC-ASB-13”) for the most dramatic color shift, this pigment will result in a wide variety of looks, when applied over different base coats. This is your time to explore! This paint should be finished with a clear coat for added protection, and a deep, water wet, high gloss look. Matte finishes, such as Alsa’s Soft Touch coating, can also produce some very unique looks.
  • For the first time available to the public, true automotive paint additive & pigment.
  • Extremely hard color shift – 2 totally different colors from different angles of viewing
  • Slightly larger particle size for more dramatic effect, and deeper/true color shift.
  • Wide variety of looks available, depending on color of base coat
  • Amazing “pop” and brilliant, vibrant colors
  • Can be used with Alsa’s One Shot Candies over the top for many interesting effects
How To (Application Guide):
  1. If your piece is already base coated, you can proceed to step # 15
  2. Make sure you have good conditions for spraying. The best temperature for spraying this paint is 70-80 degrees F, and humidity of no greater than 50%.
  3. Always apply paints in a well-ventilated area, and wear a NIOSH approved respirator to avoid breathing any fumes.
  4. If you piece is already base coated, you can proceed to step 14.
  5. Prepare and prime your part first. Epoxy primers are best for bare metal, and primer surfacers are best for plastics, fiberglass, or wood. Some plastics may require an adhesion promoter but most plastics, like ABS plastic, are fine without adhesion promoters.
  6. Before applying your primer, remove all dirt, grease, oil, salt, and chemical contaminants, by washing the surface with a commercial detergent, or other suitable cleaning method.
  7. Rinse with fresh water and allow to completely dry.
  8. Remove any existing loose paint, or rust, etc., with a wire brush or sand paper.
  9. Lightly sand glossy surfaces to create a surface profile for adhesion.
  10. Apply your primer to the surface according to the manufacturer’s specifications for your particular primer.
  11. Let your primer cure according to the manufacturers specifications for your particular primer.
  12. Lightly scuff your primer with 800-1000 grit sand paper, or you can also use a red scotch-brite pad, to create a surface profile for adhesion.
  13. Apply your base coat color over the primer according to the manufacturer’s specifications for your particular base coat, using steady even passes, until you achieve coverage. For most dramatic effect, apply a BLACK base coat, such as Alsa’s Jet Black Base coat, part number “KC-ASB-13”. Other color base coats will produce a wide variety of effects
  14. Let your base coat flash for 10-15 minutes, and then you are ready to apply the SpectraFX.
  15. If your piece is already base coated and cured, then lightly scuff your base coat with 800-1000 grit sand paper, or a red scotch brite pad to create a surface profile for adhesion.
  16. Mix your SpectraFX powder into your clear carrier (clear coat or color blender) at a ratio of 1-2 % by weight before adding the reducer or hardener.
  17. Begin applying this over your base coat, in light wet coats. Check the appearance after each coat, to determine the effect. If a stronger effect is desired, then additional coats can be applied, allowing 10-15 minutes between each coat. Check the appearance between each coat.
  18. One the desired effect is achieved, let that last coat dry for an additional 10-15 minutes, and then apply one FINAL coat, of just clear coat, such as Alsa’s “Speed Clear”, to add depth, and an additional layer of protection.

FAQs

Q. Is SpectraFX a paint?

SpectraFX is actually a powdered flake additive which is available in a range of sizes from very small to extra large. (XL flakes are very big comparable to bass boat style flake.)

Q. What can it be put into?

The best part about SpectraFX is that it can be put into any carrier you choose, clear basecoats, innercoat clears, even your final clear.

Q. What color basecoat should I use?

A black basecoat will produce the color change labeled on the jar, (for example: copper/patina over a black base will give you a copper to green change.) But using a red base with the same flake will give you an entirely different set of colors.

Q. How much do I need to add?

Again here is where the versatility of SpectraFX shines. Depending on what color basecoat you choose to put it over you may want to use just a small amount, (for example 1 gr. per 5ounces of carrier.) However for the hardest or most radical flops we recommend using 1 gr. per ounce of carrier at this ratio only one coat is needed for complete coverage. NOTE! When adding to injection molding you will need about 5% by volume.

Q. Do I need a special gun to spray SpectraFX?

SpectraFX will not clog your gun as traditional metal flake does, however when spraying the XL flake we recommend using at least a 2.0 fluid tip.

Q. What colors are available?

As explained earlier there are thousands of color combinations possible with just the two colors copper/patina and blue/emerald by changing the background color.
