How To (Application Guide):

Surface Preparation

  1. Always apply paints in a well-ventilated area, and wear a NIOSH approved respirator to avoid breathing any fumes.
  2. Make sure you have good conditions for spraying. The best temperature for spraying this paint, is 75-80 degrees F, and VERY low humidity.
  3. Prepare and prime your part first. Epoxy primers are best for bare metal, and primer surfacers are best for plastics, fiberglass, or wood. Some plastics may require an adhesion promoter but most plastics, like ABS plastic, are fine without adhesion promoters. Our tech support department can assist with what primer is best, if you are uncertain.
  4. Before applying your primer, remove all dirt, grease, oil, salt, and chemical contaminants, by washing the surface with a commercial detergent, or other suitable cleaning method.
  5. Rinse with fresh water and allow to completely dry.
  6. Remove any existing loose paint, or rust, etc, with a wire brush or sand paper.
  7. Lightly sand glossy surfaces to create a surface profile for adhesion.
  8. Apply your primer to the surface according to the manufacturers specifications for your particular primer.
  9. Let your primer cure according to the manufacturers specifications for your particular primer, and then lightly scuff that to create a surface profile for adhesion.
  10. Reduce you ALSA black base coat (ASB-13) at a ratio of 1:1 with the medium reducer included in your kit (AMR2712).
  11. Apply 1-2 coats of your reduced black base coat over your primer, using steady even passes, with about 10-15 minutes between coats.
  12. Let the black base coat dry for about 24hrs, and you are now ready to clear coat it.
  13. Mix your Speed Clear (SC1230) with the included hardener (H-222) at a ratio of 4:1.
  14. Now apply your Speed Clear over the black base coat, using steady even passes, from about 8-12 inches away from the substarate. Apply 2 medium wet coats with about 10 -15 minutes flash between coats.
  15. Let your clear coat dry for about 24hrs, and you are now ready to apply the Ghost Chrome.
  16. Begin applying Ghost Chrome using very low volume of material with a high atomization of air (fluid control almost closed). Be sure to find a good angle of light and check for even surface coverage. Continue applying Ghost Chrome, in a very light, even dusting fashion, until an even coverage is achieved.
  17. Let the Ghost Chrome dry for about 24hrs, and you are now ready to top coat.
  18. Mix the Speed Clear (SC1230) that came in your kit, with the hardener (H-222) that came in your kit, at a ratio of 4:1.
  19. Apply 2-3 coats of Speed Clear over the Ghost Chrome, using very steady even passes, and allowing about 15-20 minutes between coats. Let your final top coat dry for 24 hours, and you can now buff this, if needed. For even more color options try top-coating Ghost Chrome with our Brilliant. Ghost Chrome itself can also be tinted with our Candy Concentrate to produce exact anodizing looks.
Variations: For the look of brushed aluminum, try scuffing the clear coat in long striations, before applying the Ghost Chrome. After apply the ghost Chrome over that, it will look just like brushed aluminum. Then proceed as normal, per this applicatin guide. For engine turn look, you can use a small circle of sand paper, and attach this to a small drill, or similar device, and “spin” circles into the clear coat. After applying the Ghost chrome over that….it will look just like engine turn aluminum. Then proceed as normal, per this application guide. Using this as a base for candies is simply amazing also, and has to be seen to be appreciated. If after reading through this application guide, you find you are still having trouble, and require more assistance, please do not hesitate to contact our technical support staff. They are available Monday throught Thursday, 8am – 4pm, and Fridays, 8am – 12pm. You can reach us toll free at 1-800-999-4120 ** Warning: Ghost Chrome paint is highly flammable.
